A Glimpse into Early Time of Ba Chieu Market

Ba Chieu market

The original form of Ba Chieu market was a bustling makeshift market in Gia Dinh (Saigon’s old name), located near a small stream that flowed into the Nhieu Loc canal. The name has its own story. In Vietnamese, the word ‘Chieu’ refers to a natural pond. According to local belief, ‘Ba Chieu’ was a goddess who governed this pond area. Residents built a temple to worship her, and over time the surrounding market adopted her name.

In 1942, local authorities planned the construction of a formal market complex. The market was later renovated in 1987 and has largely maintained its structure since then. The walls you see today have survived within Saigon for almost 80 years.

How Ba Chieu Market Looks

Inside, the market is divided into different sections. Narrow aisles are lined with closely arranged stalls selling fresh vegetables, fruits, meat, seafood, clothing, household items, and ready to eat food. The air is filled with voices calling out prices, friendly negotiations, and the occasional laughter of regular customers greeting familiar vendors.

Outside the main building, street vendors continue the flow of trading. Plastic stools, woven baskets, and small carts create a lively extension of the indoor market. The atmosphere feels busy but not overwhelming, authentic rather than staged.

Ba Chieu Market in Daytime

If you arrive early in the morning, around 4:00 AM, you will see vendors setting up their stalls. Fresh produce arrives in large baskets strapped onto motorbikes. By 7:00 AM, the market becomes lively and full of sound. This is where you can observe daily shopping rituals of the locals, especially the older generations.

Daytime at Ba Chieu Market offers a snapshot of how locals shop daily. Housewives carefully choose vegetables. Restaurant owners buy ingredients in a rush. Office workers stop by for breakfast before heading to work.

You can find fresh produce, seafood, meat, dried goods, and household items. The dried seafood section is particularly popular. Many locals recommend buying dried squid here, a favorite Vietnamese snack often grilled over charcoal.

Ba Chieu Market in Nighttime

As afternoon fades, the market transforms. Twinkling lights turn on and plastic stools appear. The scent of street food slowly takes over the air. Dishes like ‘banh trang tron’, ‘bun thit nuong’, and ‘hu tieu’ are served hot and fresh. Teenagers gather in small groups, chatting while sharing snacks.

Ba Chieu market

Ba Chieu night market is also known for its affordable fashion. Several secondhand clothing stalls open, attracting young people looking for unique pieces. Accessories and small fashion items are sold at reasonable prices, making it a popular hangout spot.

The energy at night feels different from the morning. It is less about daily necessities and more about socializing and enjoyable under a youthful atmosphere.

Some helpful tips for visiting Ba Chieu Market

Ba Chieu market

1. Always Bring Cash

Most vendors operate in the traditional way. Cash is the safest and most convenient payment method, especially for small purchases.

2. Learn Basic Bargaining

Bargaining is part of the culture in many traditional Vietnamese markets. If you feel unsure about a price, you can politely offer a slightly lower one. Not too much, like if it’s 50,000 VND, trying to give an offer for 35,000 VND and see the seller’s reactions. It is not about tricking anyone but about just a long standing trading tradition in our country. That said, it is best not to bargain for every single item.

3. Check Quality Before Buying

Because goods are displayed openly throughout the day, it is wise to check carefully before purchasing. This is more important for secondhand clothes bought here because there is hardly a refund policy. You don’t want your lovely shirt teared up in the washing machine.

4. Language barrier with the local vendors:

Aside from major tourist spots like Ben Thanh Market, many vendors at Ba Chieu market may not speak much English. Using a translation app can be very helpful. You can also try learning a few simple Vietnamese phrases, such as:

  • “Xin chào” (Hello)
  • “Món này bao nhiêu tiền?” (How much is it?)
  • “Cảm ơn” (Thank you)

A little preparation goes a long way and will help you enjoy the food, shopping, and vibrant atmosphere of Ba Chieu market in the heart of Ho Chi Minh city.
