If you’ve spent any amount of time navigating the organized chaos of my hometown, you’ll know that Hanoi is a city of layers. Beneath the roar of motorbikes and the fragrant steam of Phở stalls, there is always something new emerging. Recently, the “buzz” in the Tay Ho district hasn’t just been about the sunset views – it’s been about the ocean coming to the city. I’m talking about Lotte World Aquarium Hanoi, a massive underwater world that has redefined weekend entertainment for us locals.

This isn’t just a place to look at fish; it’s an immersive narrative. It’s a sensory escape from the humidity and the traffic. Whether you are a parent looking to entertain restless kids, a couple looking for a romantic date spot, or a traveler wanting to see the modern side of Vietnam, this guide to Lotte World Aquarium Hanoi is for you.

What Is Lotte World Aquarium Hanoi, Exactly?

Lotte World Aquarium Hanoi is Vietnam’s largest indoor aquarium, opened in August 2023 as part of the Lotte Mall West Lake development on Lạc Long Quân street in Tây Hồ. It sits on the B1 and B2 floors of the mall and covers over 9,000 square meters – which, until you’re standing inside it, is hard to picture. It’s vast.

Across that space, 67 tanks house more than 31,000 marine creatures from over 400 species. Not just the standard aquarium suspects, either – we’re talking everything from tiny koi and freshwater fish native to Vietnamese rivers, all the way to sharks, manta rays, and the first California sea lion family ever born in Vietnam.

What makes Lotte World Aquarium Hanoi genuinely different from other aquariums I’ve visited is the storytelling thread running through the entire experience. The whole journey follows the legend of Cá Ông – the sacred whale spirit revered by Vietnamese coastal fishermen as a guardian deity of the sea. From the moment you enter to the moment you leave, you’re not just observing marine life. You’re walking through a myth, following a story that belongs to us.

For a Hanoian, that feels meaningful. Not like a marketing gimmick. Like someone actually thought about who we are.

How to Get to Lotte World Aquarium Hanoi

Address: B1 & B2 floors, Lotte Mall West Lake, 683 Đường Lạc Long Quân, Phú Thượng, Tây Hồ, Hà Nội

The quickest way from central Hanoi is to follow: Đào Tấn → Vành Đai 2 → Võ Chí Công → Lotte Mall West Lake. You can enter the mall from either 272 Võ Chí Công or 683 Lạc Long Quân – both work. Once inside, follow signs down to B1 and look for the aquarium entrance.

  • By Grab: 25–35 minutes from Hoàn Kiếm, around 80,000–120,000 VND (~$3–$5 USD) depending on traffic.
  • By motorbike: Straightforward if you know the Tây Hồ roads. Park in the B1/B2 garage and walk a few minutes to the entrance.
  • By bus: Several lines serve the Tây Hồ area, though you’ll usually need a short ride to the mall itself.

It’s further from the Old Quarter than most tourist sights, but the journey is easy. Don’t let the distance put you off.

Tickets and Opening Hours: What You Actually Need to Know

Lotte World Aquarium Hanoi is open daily from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM, including weekends, public holidays, and Tết. Last admission is 60 minutes before closing – so if you arrive at 9:15 PM hoping to slip in, you won’t.

Ticket prices are split between Vietnamese nationals and foreign visitors, and are based on height, not age – a detail that trips a lot of people up at the counter.

For Vietnamese visitors:

Category Weekday (Mon–Fri) Weekend & Public Holidays
Adult (140cm+) 280,000 VND (~$11 USD) 350,000 VND (~$14 USD)
Child (80–139cm) 190,000 VND (~$7.50 USD) 250,000 VND (~$10 USD)
Under 80cm Free Free

For foreign visitors:

Category Weekday (Mon–Fri) Weekend & Public Holidays
Adult (140cm+) 450,000 VND (~$18 USD) 500,000 VND (~$20 USD)
Child (80–139cm) 300,000 VND (~$12 USD) 350,000 VND (~$14 USD)
Under 80cm Free Free

One thing to watch: If a child taller than 140cm purchases a child ticket, staff will apply a 90,000 VND (~$3.50 USD) surcharge. They do check heights.

Tickets cover full access to all exhibitions and scheduled shows. Food, souvenirs, and add-on experiences are paid separately. You can buy at the counter or through platforms like Klook, Headout, or Pelago – third-party sites sometimes offer 10–15% off. The aquarium’s official website (lotteworld.vn) also runs periodic promotions, so it’s worth a quick check before you visit.

The Four Zones Inside Lotte World Aquarium Hanoi

The 650-meter sightseeing trail through Lotte World Aquarium Hanoi flows through four distinct exhibition zones, each with its own theme, atmosphere, and cast of marine characters. Here’s what to expect in each one.

Zone 1: Làng Quê Yên Bình – Peaceful Countryside Village

Zone 1.

The experience starts with a nod to the Vietnamese heartland. You walk into a space that feels like a rural village, complete with bamboo motifs and the sound of flowing streams. Here, you’ll see the fish that populate our rivers and lakes. Seeing these species up close made me realize how much life is teeming in the Red River delta that we often overlook.

Zone 2: Dạo Bước Trên Biển – Walking on the Sea

As the “flow” continues, you enter the tropical rainforest. This area is lush and humid (in a good way!), featuring giant Arapaimas and colorful Amazonian fish. The lighting here is masterfully done, creating a canopy effect that makes you forget you are in a basement in Hanoi.

Zone 3: Thám Hiểm Biển Xanh – Exploring the Blue Ocean

This was one of my favorite sections. The mangrove forest at Lotte World Aquarium Hanoi is a recreation of the vital ecosystems found in Southern Vietnam. The roots of the trees dip into the water, providing a playground for smaller fish and crustaceans. It’s an educational moment that highlights the importance of conservation in our country.

Zone 4: Quảng Trường Đại Dương – Ocean Square

This is where the colors explode. The coral tanks are mesmerizing. I found myself staring at the rhythmic pulsing of the jellyfish for far too long. If you’re an aspiring photographer, the jellyfish gallery at Lotte World Aquarium Hanoi is where you’ll get those stunning, high-contrast shots for your portfolio.

The Shows: Plan Your Day Around These

Lotte World Aquarium Hanoi

The performances at Lotte World Aquarium Hanoi are a genuine highlight. Skipping them would be like visiting a great restaurant and only ordering bread. Check the schedule posted at the entrance when you arrive.

  • Mermaid Show Held daily at 10:30 AM and 3:00 PM, with an extra performance at 7:30 PM on weekends and public holidays. Performers in elaborate mermaid costumes perform underwater at the Ocean Square main stage. Theatrical, polished, and wildly popular.
  • Magic Show A family-friendly performance mixing classic illusion with ocean themes. Entertaining for all ages.
  • Marine Biology Presentation at the Main Tank The one I’d prioritize for adults and curious older kids. Staff divers enter the main tank and walk you through the marine life inside. Informative and genuinely moving when you watch the divers interact with the sharks and rays up close.
  • Sea Lion Show Watch Leo and the sea lion family perform with their keepers. Pure, uncomplicated joy – even the most skeptical adult ends up smiling.
  • Fish Feeding and Diver Meet-and-Greet Interactive sessions throughout the day. Check timing at the front desk.

Local Tips That Actually Help

After several visits to Lotte World Aquarium Hanoi, here’s what I’ve learned about doing it properly.

  • Go on a weekday. School holidays and weekends bring real crowds. A Tuesday or Wednesday morning is a completely different experience – unhurried, quiet, and lovely.
  • Evening visits are underrated. The aquarium stays open until 10:00 PM, and after 7:00 PM on weekdays, the crowd thins considerably. The lighting effects are already spectacular, but they feel even more atmospheric in the evening.
  • Check show timings first thing. Walk in, note the show schedule at the entrance, then work backwards through the zones to arrive at Ocean Square at the right time.
  • No flash photography in certain areas. Signs will tell you where. The lighting is already gorgeous for photography – you won’t miss it.
  • Wear comfortable shoes. The trail is 650 meters of slow walking on smooth flooring. Anything that gets uncomfortable after an hour will take the edge off the experience.
  • Outside food and drinks aren’t allowed, except baby food and medically prescribed diet food. Lotte Mall has multiple restaurants on other floors – eat before you descend or head up afterward.
  • It’s fully indoors. Rain, blazing summer heat, dusty autumn wind – none of it matters. Lotte World Aquarium Hanoi works in any weather, which makes it genuinely useful in a city that gets scorching summers and grey, drizzly winters.

Lotte vs. Times City: Which Aquarium is Better?

This is the most common question I get from friends visiting Hanoi. For years, the Vinpearl Aquarium at Times City was the only game in town. Here’s my local take:

  • Times City: It’s older and has a more “classic” feel. It’s located in the south of the city and is great if you are already in that area.
  • Lotte World Aquarium Hanoi: It’s significantly more modern. The lighting is better, the tanks are cleaner, and the “Sea of Vietnam” theme makes it feel more culturally relevant. The tunnel at Lotte is also more impressive in terms of clarity and scale.

If you have to choose only one, I’d say go to Lotte World Aquarium Hanoi. The surrounding mall also offers a much better dining and shopping experience to round out your day.
