More than 400 years old, the Hoi An lantern has long been one of the most remarkable features of Hoi An Old Town for both visitors and locals. Every time I walk through the ancient streets at night, I am always struck by how these soft glowing lights transform the town into something magical.

Hoi An lanterns are not only famous for their elegant designs, but they also carry deep cultural meaning and reflect the heritage of Central Vietnam. In this article, let’s explore the origin of the Hoi An lantern, its importance in local life, and the careful craftsmanship behind this timeless symbol.

The History of Hoi An Lantern

Hoi An Lantern in The Past

The history of Hoi An lanterns dates back several centuries to the time when Hoi An was a bustling trading port known as Faifo or Hai Pho. During this period, Chinese and Japanese merchants came here to trade and settle. And, lanterns are like their lucky charms which were believed to bring prosperity and protection to the owner. Therefore, they were hung in front of their houses to attract good luck.

According to historical records, Buddhism flourished and monks lit lanterns in temples on full moon nights in the past. Later, a king introduced this lantern lighting custom into the royal palace, and from there, it gradually spread to the general population. In Hoi An, hanging lanterns in front of houses on special occasions became a familiar tradition, even though lantern streets as we see today did not yet exist.

Hoi An Lantern Today

Many elderly people in Hoi An believe that the lanterns today are a unique creation of the local people themselves. In the past, lanterns were often large and expensive, affordable only to wealthy families. Over time, ordinary people learned the techniques and began making lanterns on their own, mainly to decorate their homes. I find it fascinating that such a simple desire for beauty and light could lead to an iconic craft.

To this day, no one knows exactly when Hoi An lanterns first appeared or who created them. But whoever that person was, their legacy continues to glow brightly, not only in Hoi An but all around the world.

The Importance of Hoi An Lanterns in Local Life

Lanterns are a familiar product of traditional craft villages throughout Vietnam, especially in Hoi An. You can see Hoi An lanterns everywhere, in restaurants, festivals, temples, and family homes, particularly during Tet Holiday and the Mid Autumn Festival. Some families even preserve lanterns that are hundreds of years old, passing them down through generations and displaying them only during the Hoi An lantern festival.

Hoi An lanterns symbolize shining light. The residents of Hoi An Old Town believe light represents the human spirit, so offering lanterns at shrines is also a way to pray for protection and blessings from the gods. Lanterns are closely associated with prosperity, happiness, and good luck.

Colors also play an important role. Red lanterns symbolize fortune and wealth, while other colors express harmony, peace, and joy. Today, Hoi An lanterns have become an essential part of the old town’s identity. They create a spiritual and romantic atmosphere and stand as one of Hoi An’s most precious cultural legacies.

Exploring the Lantern Making Tradition in Hoi An

Hoi An lantern making is one of the oldest traditional crafts still preserved in the town today. What I love most about this craft is how simple the materials are, yet how much skill and care are required to turn them into something so beautiful.

The Two Main Materials of The Lantern

Hoi An lanterns are made from just two main materials, bamboo and fabric.

  • Bamboo: The bamboo must be mature and fresh. After being cut, it is boiled and soaked in salt water for about ten days to prevent insects and increase durability. Once dried, the bamboo is split into thin strips and shaped into frames of different sizes and designs.
  • Fabric: The lanterns are covered with silk, satin, linen, or raw silk. Silk is the most commonly used material because it is strong and creates a soft, warm glow. The fabric color also determines the color of the lantern’s light.

Basic Structure of a Hoi An Lantern

A traditional Hoi An lantern usually includes the following parts:

  • Frame: made from bamboo, lightweight but strong enough to hold the lantern’s shape
  • Fabric covering: carefully stretched and glued onto the frame
  • Decorative details: such as tassels, cords, or bows to enhance elegance
  • Light source: usually a bulb or LED placed inside to create a warm glow

Lantern Making Process

The process of making a Hoi An lantern can be summarized in three main steps:

1. Making the frame

Bamboo strips are bent and tied together to form the lantern’s shape.

2. Covering the frame

Fabric is cut to match the lantern size and carefully glued onto the frame.

3. Decorating the lantern

Final details like tassels or patterns are added to complete the lantern.
