Best coffee shops in district 2
Okkio Coffee
Located on an overwhelming street corner on Xuan Thuy Street of Thao Dien Ward, Okkio Caffe makes it difficult for anyone passing by because of its striking red color and nostalgic design. Design inspiration comes from Wong Kar-wai’s film 2046, by Okkio’s founder who is a fan of the director. Wong Kar-wai is famous for his iconic aesthetic and color films. Therefore, Okkio Caffe seems to have become a corner dedicated to those who have a special love for his films.
The movie 2046 is about a train returning from 2046 in the future. Therefore, the front of the shop is designed like the windows of a train with iron bars as a highlight. The dark red color not only increases brand awareness but also highlights the nostalgic spirit that the founder wanted to achieve. Inside, counters and ceilings are built with the curved shape of a train.
“Frame in frame” (frame in frame) is one of the cinematographic techniques that make Wong Kar-Wai’s mark. The design team has designed windows, ceilings, doors, … based on this idea to bring natural light into the shop. During the day, the shop almost does not need electric lights, but only makes use of natural light.

Quang San Art Museum
If you are an art lover and want to explore Vietnamese culture, don’t miss Quang San Art Museum in District 2—a meaningful meeting point with the art and history of the Vietnamese people. Although it just officially opened in 2023, Quang San Art Museum has already created a significant buzz in the art community and attracted many art enthusiasts as well as foreign visitors.
The museum currently houses over 1,000 works of art, and notably, the paintings and sculptures displayed here are all part of the private collection of Mr. Nguyễn Thiều Quang (the founder) and his wife. He shared that each piece is a breath of art, and confining these works to a small personal space would be a waste. Therefore, he wanted to establish a museum to contain all these breaths of art for the appreciation of those who love it.
The museum space is divided into three floors, resembling an hourglass; when you step onto any floor, the events of that period come alive with the continuous presence of artworks rich in Indochinese artistic style. Starting with the ground floor, this area showcases works by renowned painters and sculptors who made significant contributions during the early days of Vietnamese art.
The first floor is divided into two sections: the first area continues the theme of the first-generation artists from the Indochinese Fine Arts School and other contemporaneous artists such as Nguyễn Khang, musician Văn Cao, and Mai Văn Hiến. The second area focuses on the wartime resistance against the Americans, featuring many paintings created by artists whose lives were closely tied to the war. The second floor displays works from the period of national reunification and the beginning of the renovation policy in Vietnamese art.
Quang San Art Museum was established as a milestone to celebrate the nation’s artistic achievements and is a source of pride for those who love the arts. The name “Quang San” is also very meaningful, as it is derived from the last name of Mr. Nguyễn Thiều Quang and the name of his mother, Mrs. Nguyễn Thị San. “Quang San” means “bright mountain,” and each painting in the museum illuminates fascinating stories about the artists’ portraits, the destinies of the artworks, and the intriguing anecdotes hidden behind the paintings.

Tran Ngoc Dien Street
Tran Ngoc Dien Street is a major road located near the People’s Committee of Thao Dien Ward in District 2, intersecting with several major streets and famous recreational spots. You may not know that each street in Vietnam is named after soldiers who contributed to the revolution or significant historical events, and Ms. Tran Ngoc Dien is no exception. According to various historical records, Ms. Tran Ngoc Dien was a member of the Vietnamese Revolutionary Youth Committee. In 1927, due to her exceptional skill in playing the pipa and zither, she was tasked with establishing a reformed troupe named “Đồng Nữ Ban” to promote patriotic education and resist foreign invaders.
During its two years of active performance, the troupe presented plays such as “Giọt Máu Chung Tình,” “Hiệp Tình Quân Tử,” and “Bên Nghĩa, Bên Tình,” aimed at encouraging the revolutionary spirit among the Southern populace. However, after some time, the colonial government in southern Vietnam recognized the troupe’s significant influence and ordered it to cease operations under the pretext of disrupting public order and promoting national sentiments. Despite this, the melodies of the troupe remained deeply etched in the minds of the people, as did the name Tran Ngoc Dien.
It wasn’t until 2013, when Professor Tran Van Khe organized a regular artistic program, that it was revealed the correct name on her legal documents and the tombstone was Tran Ngoc Vien, not Tran Ngoc Dien. Consequently, the street was inaccurately named, but this discrepancy has led many passersby to recall this story as a memorable tale.
