History

Shopping at Ben Thanh Market

Ben Thanh Market is one of the oldest markets in Ho Chi Minh City and a renowned tourist destination in Vietnam. The market dates back to the early 17th century, when it served as a meeting place for local merchants near the Ben Thanh River (now the Saigon River). From 1859 to 1870, the French colonial authorities referred to the region as Les Halles Centrales (or Central Market). In 1912, the market relocated to a new building and took on the name Ben Thanh Market.

In 1914, the market was moved to a more central position near My Tho Railway Station (now Saigon bus station) and dubbed the “New Ben Thanh Market” to distinguish it from its predecessor. The new one was refurbished in 1985 to keep up with the city’s expansion, but the iconic clock tower at the south entrance remained unchanged. Despite subsequent renovations, the market remains one of Saigon’s oldest surviving structures, having witnessed war and peace. The market’s architecture reflects the French colonial era’s influence, incorporating local features to create a structure that is both functional and visually appealing.

Structure of Ben Thanh Market

The market is organized around four main gates, each facing a busy street and offering different types of goods:

  • South Gate: Facing Le Loi Street, this is the main entrance with the iconic clock tower. Here, you’ll find fabrics, clothes, and dry foods.
  • North Gate: Facing Le Thanh Ton Street, this gate has stalls selling fresh food and fruits.
  • East Gate: Located on Phan Boi Chau Street, this area offers cosmetics and confectionery.
  • West Gate: Facing Phan Chu Trinh Street, this gate is known for handicrafts, souvenirs, and shoes.

Additionally, there are 12 side doors leading into various sections of the market.

Location: Ben Thanh Market is located at the crossroads of Phan Boi Chau, Phan Chu Trinh, Le Thanh Ton, and the Quach Thi Trang building site, making it one of the most important destinations in District 1. So you might say that everything leads to Ben Thanh.
